France has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever
This community seems to think that bad things happening to bad people is uplifting, or that justice is uplifting. It doesn’t feel that way to me though.
There was a poll last month asking if politics and schadenfreude posts should be banned: https://lemmings.world/post/26744357
The result was overwhelmingly yes: https://lemmy.world/post/30918729
I’m not sure whether this story counts as either of those. Mods?
Technically, the charges against X don’t sound “political” as such:
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into the platform. In the official filing, X stands accused of the “alteration of the functioning of an automated data processing system by an organized group” as well as the "fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system by an organized group.”
According to French newspaper Le Monde, these are considered “major computer hacking offenses,” which can carry sentences of up to 10 years in prison and a €300,000 (roughly $350,000) fine under French law.
However, the purpose of X gaming the algorithm is almost certainly at least partially for political benefit. I think you could technically upvote this because you find it uplifting that sketchy big tech practices are facing pushback without enjoying it as schadenfreude, but personally this story doesn’t really feel “uplifting” to me.
If fining one of the most influential social platform overseas that’s actively used to push propaganda isn’t political, idk what is
Not even just propaganda, active malice and hatred.
Which makes X’s wrongdoing political, but the actual news isn’t about politics imo.
Mods?
still unsure on this one. it borders on schadenfreude, but for this one, the actions are being taken in a legal way, which is better.
I’d argue it’s different for an individual as oposed to a company as well. If it was ‘Country opens criminal investigation on Oil Company because of Nature Damage’ it wouldn’t be freude because of the schaden done to the oil company. But if the news was ‘CEO of Oil Company that caused Nature Damage’ I’d say that’s schadenfreude because the news is about a bad thing happening to a bad person.
I do get your perspective, but one of the things that we (as the community) decided was that if something bad happening to bad folks will not be considered uplifting. There were many posts about a month ago, of similar nature to this, and then someone from community just made a rant post, to which we opened voting for. And since then, we have “discouraged” such posts.
I followed the discussion and agree schadenfreude is not uplifting and also believe its up to mods to make final decisions, just arguing why i think in this case this news is not very schadenfreude and not necessarily political anyway in an effort to convince you to not remove this post. I’m aware others feel different though.
Blursed reaction gif, it’s beautiful
That’s a top notch username.
