  • Heroic Launcher, Lutris, Bottles, or just launching them through the command line if you really want to for some reason, are your options. Heroic I just started using and it’s great. It’s especially good for games from other stores, but you can add anything to it. Lutris is pretty good, but you have to add everything manually (which you’ll have to do no matter what for what you’re asking about). Bottles is functional, but it is much harder to use than the others, but probably lighter weight if that matters to you at all (and I’ll tell you now, it doesn’t).

  • The comment above says they want to replace their W10 desktop, so it isn’t what they want. If it’s what you want then fine, but I was writing the comment for someone who wants a desktop, not a console. If you want a console, go ahead and wait or use Bazzite. If you want a desktop then the best options are already available and SteamOS isn’t going to be it.

  • I think that’s mostly fixed at this point. I have AMD, but I’ve heard Nvidia is handled better now. Nvidia keeps everything closed source, so everyone is fucked, but support is improving. Make a Bootable USB of Garuda (or whatever distro you choose, but Garuda Dragonized I’d expect to have the drivers) and try it out. It’s very low effort to try.

AMD open-sources everything, so their stuff works everywhere. That’s why FSR is always available, because it works on any device and is open source, so it’s easy to support. DLSS only works on Nvidia devices and requires a lot more effort for developers to support, so they often only do it if Nvidia pays them because it costs them money to implement an extra solution and not everyone will even be able to use it.

  • Yeah, the driver thing is pretty much solved at this point. If you have AMD there’s literally nothing to worry about. If you have Nvidia, you’re probably also good to go, but slightly less guaranteed. Make a Bootable USB of the distro you choose and try it to see if your hardware is supported. It’s low effort and no risk.

Something you might not know is the drivers come packaged with the kernel, so you literally never have to worry about updating your drivers. They’re just there in the background up to date. It awesome.

The experience with Linux is so much smoother than Windows because the system manages most things for you. All your applications will be updated by the package manager, so you don’t need to go to websites to download updates. Graphics drivers are just there. Everything is just handled for you.

  • It’s built on top of Arch. The distro I’m using is Garuda, which is also built on Arch, and there’s a gaming version that includes everything you need to play games immediately. No one should use SteamOS probably for a desktop. They should use something like Garuda. SteamOS is for a console-like experience.

  • Oh so according to you it’s not racist, it’s just fatphobic AND racist since by saying he “presents clean and kind” you’re implying he is neither of those things. Definitely not racist to imply that a Chinese person is unclean and unkind. Fuck off.

It was the fucking people in China making the comparison! Come on. You keep ignoring this in order to just say westerners are evil. That’s why bringing up western stuff doesn’t matter because the conversation isn’t about any of that. It’s about the comparison of President Xi to Pooh Bear. You just keep swerving around trying to hit a different target because the actual conversation doesn’t work in your favor.

Clean, meaning morally, no he isn’t. Kind, not so much. He presents as if he’s a perfect story book character, like Pooh Bear (hence the comparison), but he wouldn’t still be in power if this were the case. The people in China recognize this, which is why they started the comparison. It spread to the west because of the outsized response to it. It’s the Streisand Effect. It was funny how insulted he was by this that it started being banned, so it spread because his fragile ego couldn’t handle it.

Is it fat-phobic? Probably. Is it racist? Hell no. It’s just making fun of someone with a fragile ego with someone he’s made public that he’s insulted by. Implying it’s racist because Pooh Bear is yellow is just trying to shut it up by making shit up. It has nothing to do with that. It’s just what the Chinese picked to make fun of him with.

  • Prove it? Sure. It’s a system where the singular ruling party controls elections and all candidates must be approved by them. If that’s not a dictatorship then I’ve never heard of one.

You can argue it provides utility or stability or something if you want, but arguing it isn’t a dictatorship shows how ignorant you are. Of course it’s exactly what I’d expect though.

I don’t know how the west doing anything bad is relevant to this conversation. It was never part of the discussion and is purely a red-herring to distract from your bad faith argument.

Also, once again, the Pooh Bear thing is from China. It isn’t racist. It has nothing to do with race. It’s making fun of him being fat and the way he presents himself as clean and kind. Prove it is, since you’re asking for proof of basic stuff we all know.

  • GamePass on the cloud works, but MS has made a choice to not let it work on Linux. This is not an issue with Linux. It’s an issue with MS and Windows. They choose to distribute the games using a proprietary encryption method, which harms the user’s experience and makes it only work on Windows. You can’t mod your games (unless the explicitly allow it and let you decrypt it) because “fuck you, this is ours.” Fuck them. If they want my money they can make a better product that works where I want to be. You should hold yourself to that level too, not lick their boot and thank them for the privilege.

  • Yeah, on top of not having to deal with applications checking for updates when they’re launched, and then manually installing them, not having to deal with drivers is amazing. Windows users talk about how easy the experience is with Windows, but they’re just used to how shitty it is and haven’t seen the alternative. I just occasionally update everything in my system when I think about it and it’s good to go. No being forced to update and restart. No hassle. Just simple and quick and everything is up-to-date.

  • It feels like the trend is changing in that direction, but most games weren’t released in the past year or so, and even those were designed and built not thinking Linux would be where it is now. We’ll have to see how it evolves.

I agree that a lot of large publishers seem to be actively harming the experience to ensure Linux users can’t use their service, for whatever reason. That needs to change. They need to be punished for this, ideally by helping people switch to Linux and making them realize they don’t need those games if they don’t care about them as a user.
