    I wonder if it had been infected prior to the vaccination. Depending on the location of the bite/scratch it can take months for symptoms to begin to show.

    I know potential vectors are everywhere, but I’d also imagine there being more wild animal interaction in Georgia than Chicago.

    If that’s not the case, then failed vaccine administration/storage or immune system defect seems likely. After all, even the best vaccine isn’t an immutable magic cure, it’s just a method to prime an immune system for a specific pathogen. If the immune system is compromised or the vaccine dose defective (got too warm, was expired, poorly administered, etc) then it’s not gonna work as well.
