There is something more infuriating about people putting open-source project communities behind a Discord ToS-wall.
Linux isn’t a standard emoji, so that’s a custom one from one of your servers. It’s a Nitro feature to use custom server emoji in other servers.
It still feels weird to have to pay for an emoji. One that is open source to boot. I just ended up copy/pasting an actual image file from https://slackmojis.com/
You’re not specifically paying for an emoji, either. You’re paying to use emojis on “servers” other than the one they were uploaded for.

Can you host your own server? Or is it just their way of saying “this is on our infastructure, pay for it”?
Discord “servers” are just groups. You can’t host an actual server yourself and connect it to Discord.
Yes, they paywall some features, that’s one way they raise money to pay for running their infrastructure, because the base product is free.
You can make your own Discord servers and upload your own custom emojis, but without Nitro you can only use those custom emojis in the servers where they were uploaded.
The feature you’re getting with Nitro here is the ability to use custom emojis uploaded in server A when sending messages in server B or C or D, etc. You also have to be and remain a member of server A to use its custom emojis.
Its basically Discord’s version of Fortnite cosmetics.

This is why you CANNOT use Discord. This is encrapification.
Discord pays for their own infrastructure, so their “Nitro” subscription pays for additional features, which off the top of my head include:
- larger attachment sizes
- higher video quality when screen sharing in a call
- higher audio quality in calls
- using custom emojis and stickers from other “servers” (they aren’t actual self hosted servers, that’s just the name of discord communities, they have a collection of text+voice channels that you can talk in)
- built in themes with discord client
The “Linux” emoji, as the other person said, is likely from a different community (“server”)
If you create your own server you can add whatever image you want as custom emoji/sticker. Someone probably uploaded an image of Tux as a custom emoji for their community
