The tech industry has spent roughly a gazillion dollars trying to convince people to strap face computers on their heads. It hasn’t worked.
But the tech guys haven’t given up. Their new pitch: Instead of buying bulky goggles that replace your reality with a computer-generated version of something else, what about some glasses?
At first glance, this makes a bunch of sense: People don’t wear big heavy stuff on their head unless they have to — like if they’re skiing, perhaps. But lots of people wear glasses. So if the tech guys want to sell new tech, they should stop trying to make things people don’t wear and focus on the things people already wear.
It’s really funny to see people who don’t have friendly personalities or understand what people want try to push tech that answers no real problem.
I don’t want VR to work in a virtual office from home. I want to be immersed somewhere fun or put in a situation that feels dangerous without the risk. Why do I want a boss to monitor where my eyes are looking during a meeting?
AR doesn’t seem like it has any purpose other than adding another layer of advertising on everything.
Eeh, I have to wear glasses anyway. I think some of the things you see in movies could be cool, like seeing my wife and kids when I’m out for work without having to stare at my phone.
But, yea, it’s mostly going to be “Hot moms in your area” and none of those ever work out. Most are serious uggos.
I don’t give a fuck what Facebook is doing with VR because I would never touch their bullshit, being tainted with the evil that they are. On the other hand I will be ordering a Steam Frame as soon as the BUY button is available to click because I have immensely enjoyed having an Index and the Frame seems like a great evolution of their product. Valve is doing the real work on what VR needs now.
This, the headline, bothers me so much. It is intentionally wrong (“can’t” means it is not possible or capable, which is false and incredibly easily verified). “aren’t selling enough” is what they actually wanted to say, but then every single company ever created can say ‘we aren’t selling enough (because we want all the money in the universe)’ and that as a headline is boring as fuck. So they lie with “can’t”, and this shit pisses me the fuck off.
This shit - whether it is a post title on lemmy, or the article title itself - is not journalism, it’s just lying to coax in readers and then explaining away the lie, like ‘oh no you don’t understand, we didn’t mean it like that’. Explain the shit truthfully and clearly, front and center, or get the fuck off the stage.
They have stopped production but I feel like they are still invested in the AVP ecosytem. They still have their new NBA thing going on and are still updating the OS quite frequently.
Sorry, no money to experiment with helping the poor or improve society though, we wish we could but austerity demands we don’t.
