I’d love to see how the textures were packed for the UV wrapping. In Crash Bandicoot for PS1 they managed to save a ton of space by utilizing Vertex Coloring and then adding details using a small Texture.
I tried searching for examples of how old games utilized every single pixel of texture images, sometimes using one image for multiple characters and objects, but for some reason my searches are coming up blank.

I found this technique a while back that uses gradient textures. It’s way too good for general low-poly use with a small file size.
