At the end of the live model painting session the model came around and looked at everyone’s rendition of the 40 minute pose. When she saw mine she squealed and gasped “Looks just like me!” Dude, I almost cried. I did tippy taps all the way home and woke my wife up to tell her I was so excited!

And you’re totally right! Looking at a photograph isn’t bad particularly if it’s digital and I can zoom all the way in and sample colors if I get stuck. Live I just need to get good 😂
They look incredible. Is this digital? Is this Gimp or Sketchbook? Can you share your setup? How do you judge the brightness of your screen when in a brightly lit room?

Sketchbook on an android tablet.
My setup Samsung Tab S10 Ultra with Sketchbook. Sometimes I use my Samsung S24 Ultra phone instead. I also have a Huion tablet attached to my laptop when I want to work on something higher than 4000px by 4000px. The laptop can go to 12000x12000 without losing performance but the Android devices struggle past 4000x4000 and start to crash and freeze a lot sadly.
For values I use these from PIXISS. Got em off of Amazon as I couldn’t find em anywhere else sadly. I am currently using the box method for proportions. I rarely use the value card but occasionally I get stuck and need it.
But how do you set your devices up on the easel? Or do you draw on your lap? Do you draw standing up or sitting down?
Oh and for sketchbook I found a brush that lays out the boxes for me since the app doesn’t support it natively.
The art studio has a small folding table I keep near just in case but mostly hold the tablet in my lap. The same when I’m on my couch painting or what have you.
My posture sucks, I had a few back surgeries as a kid to help but it’s still pretty bad. It’s comfortable for me but most seating positions I use in cars for example everyone else hates.
Thanks for explaining, as a digital artist I always feel out of place in these situations and I never know where to put my stuff or how to work alongside all the analog artists. Sometimes I just sit on the floor, with everyone else, towering (almost tripping) over me, standing by their easels. Very out of place.
That’s pretty much how it is for me. When I started I was so far behind the other artists ability, now there are only two artists I feel are ahead of me. Oddly that makes me feel legitimate, like I belong.
To be fair, Craig, who owns the space has been completely welcoming and encouraging the whole time and so has every artist I’ve talked to there. It’s my own insecurities.
