Still struggling to get on the horse again. Been somewhat mired in a depressive episode, so it’s hard getting the motivation to do anything, even play video games. Still managing to do the 5 mins or so a day on each language to keep the streak alive, but my hearts not really in anything at the moment.
Genuinely have no idea why I’m so down these days either. Nothings really changed.
In other news the new Duocon was on, and it was going on about removing the AI tools and such and that’s sorta cool they did the uptake on removing the AI toolset they were going to implement. Still not exactly keen on Duolingo as a platform, but at least it’s slightly less worse. They’re really pushing for those points being the main metric, and honestly, hearing that 130 is the go to for employability at least helps give me a target to aim for on Duolingo other than just keep a streak. Not that I’m actually trying to find a job in Spanish or Japanese. But setting goals to target is nice, otherwise you get a bit aimless at times. 130 is just a number, and completely arbitrary, but language is already arbitrary enough so more arbitration isn’t going to cause me much of an upset, so I say, why the fuck not just have an arbitrary goal.
It’s roughly 11pm now. So I’ll try and kick into gear a bit more once midnight passes. Just so I’ve done more in my waking period. And it should keep me good for the Friday streak too. The software I use has sort of lost it’s pull, so I think I’m just going to use the older method of just setting up journaling/timers separately to Steam apps. Going to use Obsidian, some random Linux pomodoro timer, and lofi girl music on YouTube. Should be enough to set me going when the next hour starts. I’ll probably look more into timers after this post to get ready, and also mentally prepare myself.
Hey arxaseus hope you get through that depressive episode, that is so shitty and I’m sorry you have to deal with that… I understand and am super proud and happy to hear you are keeping that 5mins a day. I am currently doing the same until I gain motivation to pick up the speed again. You got this, no need to force yourself past that 5 mins until you can again!
And what?! One of the most pro-AI companies admitting they went overboard with AI? This is magnificient news! Started seeing so many mistakes that weren’t getting fixed…
I didn’t know 130 is employable level. I also like arbitrary goals - keeps me motivated. Guess that’ll be my goal on duolingo as well. I use duolingo mainly as a vocab trainer and it’s been good for that so far.
Hope the power of habits, pomodoro, and lofi girl are helping you through this tough episode right now.
Pretty lacking, but this comments reminds me of something:
“Why not use an alt, or even make a new alt, to have a feed of just languages I either study, can understand by extension, or that I don’t get opportunity to use much?”
Made myself an account on another Mbin instance (love domain blocking and UI simple and responsive to scripts), and made sure the first thing was to set the languages. Also will be putting the homepage as one of the tabs my browser automatically opens at startup, but it already looks promising!
And on a side note, Germans and French do like to talk, eh? Their posts often flood my feeds even with English enabled 😅 (not complaining though; should make study easier)
That’s a pretty neat idea. I also follow german-speaking communities and it’s awesome how active they are!
Can’t trust the meme communities though lol. [email protected] uses tongue-in-cheek literal translations from english sometimes. It’s a really cool community but I need to be mindful not to accidentally learn memespeak instead of proper grammar lol.
