I’m really lucky that I somehow got the right headspace from the beginning. Even back in preschool I was just confused by these comments, thinking “I’m not weird, I’m just me.” They just never bothered me - I knew intrinsically that they were wrong, and didn’t care that someone might think wrong things about me.

“neurodivergent” is just this era’s temporary term for identifying an individual that is less in line with current social standards of “norm”. Historically, more and more are socially labelled as such until the norm is the minority.

Take away the ideas of a society or even society itself and there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone currently rocking the label. In fact theyre likely an entity that outperforms the “average” human. Combined with the species being socially competitive to get the most of things, stemming from being the most naturally persistent “be the best” nature that led to bring the dominant species, those of a more “traditional” social bound come up with these terms in fear of their irrelevance or being devalued.

Don’t acknowledge the label. Just be you. The label is an artificial social problem of other’s and has nothing to do with you and your existence.

Just in case someone decides to heed this terrible advice…

      1. Diagnoses are needed to get relevant professional help. Discouraging that is unhelpful.

      2. There is literally something different in the brain of someone with a neurodivergent condition.

      3. “There’s nothing wrong with you” is incredibly triggering for a lot of neurodivergent people.

      4. I agree that societal attitudes are part of the problem, but that’s little solace to someone who’s struggling because there’s often little choice in whether or not they carry on by masking.

      5. ‘Neurodivergent’ may be a temporary term but it’s the best umbrella term we have right now. Denying that is basically erasure.

The wave of „just accept it” is belittling and harmful. It actively segregates, it denies access to professional help, it leaves people who could easily be self sufficient with no tools for self sufficiency.

And most importantly, the way brains work, for something to be recognized it needs a (preferably named) category. Orange was bright brown before we decided that it’s a separate thing.

I’m getting hung up on “I’ll have half a pound of bright browns please” … “Look at that bright brown grove” … “A nice glass of bright brown juice”.

thanks for posting this, “autism/ADHD/etc is a superpower” type of stuff drives me up multiple walls. It’s incredibly harmful and in general annoying. My brain often makes my life actively worse and even if I lived in a world made of bubble wrap that coddled me I would still struggle, just with fewer coping mechanisms. If there really is anyone out there who has just hella cool rain man brain I seriously envy them.

Also I know this might come across as nitpicking formatting but when you add newlines between ordered list items in markdown it restarts the list at 1 each time:

        1. This is a paragraph

        2. I hit enter twice so this is a different paragraph and it’s listed as a 1 even though I typed a 2 at the beginning of this line

        3. This is a paragraph

        4. I hit enter just once so this is the same paragraph and this point shows a 2 even though I typed 420 at the beginning of this line

I originally typed it as 1) 2) 3) with single line breaks and it reformatted to 1. 2. 3.

Same with yours, it shows as 1. 2. 3. with single line breaks. It’s the same on Boost and via the feddit.uk site, so I don’t know what’s going on 🤷‍♂️
