Okay you have a point. Maybe I was too quick to let loose an anxious post.

Thanks! It seemed to me that this’d mean I had to run something like my custom kernel which I have to forever maintain myself.
Thanks for pointing me to the correct solution. I figure out implementation.

This is actually difficult for me. When the wiki starts talking about custom kernels, I don’t fully understand it yet. I’m learning, but that’s where things stop being obvious.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway thanks for pointing me to the exact location. My struggle is knowing what to implement / what the correct solution is. See, now that I know install nvidia-580xx-dkms is the right thing and won’t break things I know what to do. (if that makes sense?)

R/n I have the card just deactivated. Not looking to play AAA games but using this laptop as a “player 2” for Minecraft multiplayer.
It’s just thst deactivating the card and calling it dead silicon seems a tad sad…

Ah! This was key information I did not understand before. Thanks.

Ah. I begin to understand. Thank you for the clarification. This takes away some of the having to do something new anxiety.

Thank you for a nuanced answer. I start understanding.
For people who’ve gone the linux-lts66 (or similar) route from AUR: is that something you’d consider “set and forget,” or does it eventually turn into a kind of babysitting?

Maybe I don’t understand. Here’s what I got form the news. I can install nvidia-580xx-dkms from AUR but it needs be build for my kernel. So everytime I run pacman -Syu I risk a kernel update thst needs me to manually rebuild dkms. Right? Feels like anxiety before each update…
Relatively new to this. Probably missing things I haven’t heard of.

Haha funny, and do maintenance with every single update. No thanks.

But are we talking a couple of years or a couple of months till Debian rolls to 590?
How is steam on FreeBSD these days? Main use for this laptop would be playing “old” games like DarkSouls.

Gnawh Penisburg. I’m still sporting a laptop with a 1070 from about a decade ago…
Gentoo gang where?

A detailed room-mapping scan is basically a wealth report disguised as vacuum telemetry: square footage, room count, layout complexity, “bonus” spaces like offices or nurserie; all of it feeds straight into socioeconomic profiling. And once companies have that floor plan, they’re not just storing it; they’re monetizing it, feeding it into ad networks, data brokers, and pricing algorithms that adjust what you see (=and what you pay) based on the shape of your living space.
And a mapped floor plan also quietly exposes who lives in the home, how they move, and what can be inferred from that.

Now that you’ve mentioned… Knocks on wood
Pft. I compile Gentoo for my GameCube, btw

Uh… Hol up. So if we can maybe see down to 0.2 mm and the 1080p screen has 0.7 mm pixels… That’s pretty much what I’m saying. 1080p is noticeably grainy.
The text in 4k looks crisper. I concur I can’t count individual pixels, but reading game menus in 1080p feels rougher and makes me squint. Reading in 4k feels more like reading on print paper or a good e-eeader.
This and yes, the build quality of newer screens also contributes.

It does make a difference for reading text like subtitles or navigating game menus.

Right in the CVD…

Started like three mints ago b/c fed up with windows. Got 2nd SSD and set up dual boot with Bazzite. Initially this was just to fuck around but i switched to Bazzite as main distro within two days. It just works. Won me over when Darksouls was immediately displaying the Playstation glyphs when I plugged in the Dualshock 4.
Even modding was relatively easy. Things are well documented now and; and I shame to admit, ChatGPT is surprisingly not the shittiest at helping me with my issues (specific example setting up Darksouls Remastered Gadget to run with the Seamless Coop mod which required some custom code shenanigans… For which the vibe code was serviceable!)
Haven’t booted my windows partition for a month ish now. Probably won’t for a long time.
GentOwO gang!
