  • The original Silent Hill games were created by an internal group within Konami called Team Silent. This team was formed by underperforming Konami staff to work on a Resident Evil competitor that Konami higher-ups wanted to underperform and give them a chance to fire said underperforming staff. Instead, they struck gold with SH1.

Team Silent suddenly had a level of fame to themselves, but they were still Konami’s red-headed stepchild. 2-4 were similarly successful, with 2 being the high point of the series.

After SH3, key staff started to depart from Konami. By the time the 5th game, Homecoming, came out, much of the original team had been replaced with those more aligned with Konami bigwigs that wanted to turn the series into a moneymaker instead of the quiet success it was built as.

An example of this is the Silent Hill HD Collection for PS3 and X360. The ‘remaster’ of SH2 and 3 was anything but. They had to make these remasters with incomplete codebases, no original staff to question, even some of the original voice acting was missing because Konami straight-up deleted the original source code.

There are those that say that SH never recovered from the gutting of Team Silent, and they tend to get louder with each entry into the series. Sometimes they have valid points, but not always.

  • Rather than give you specific recommendations, here’s some guidance for parts

Mobo: The more slots you have for RAM and storage, the better.

CPU: literally anything. More cores and faster cores are ideal, but CPU requirements for these things are generally lower than a desktop.

RAM: Buy 1 stick of the fastest and highest capacity RAM your motherboard can handle. When you’re ready or you start to see slowdown, buy another of the same stick. You can get far on 16-32GB, you won’t need much more until later.

Storage: an SSD for the OS and one or more HDDs for storage.

PSU: generally anything in the 500-700 range will be good. You’ll want more if you plan to put a GPU in, though.

I’ve been using 10 LTSC for a few months now, it works great with the few Windows-only apps I still use. I mainly use it to organize my media library, but it’s not had any problems with the few games I’ve installed with Kernel-level anti-cheat (Destiny 2, Delta Force)

I had to download the Xbox Accessories app to control my Elite controller, but that’s really it.

  • Some good ones that are not yet mentioned

    • Ribbit King is Golf game with frogs for balls which get strategically shot around a map littered with bonuses and obstacles. Players alternate shots and try to have the most points after both players reach the hole. It’s extremely cute and great local multi-player fodder
    • Stuntman is tough as nails. You are a Hollywood stuntman pulling off increasingly complex stunts for movies being filmed. At the end of each shoot you get to see the movie trailer filled with clips of your own driving.
    • Black is a big dumb loud shooter, and it has zero reservations or shame in that. That’s what makes it so much fun to play
    • Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is excellent 3D brawling. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is excellent 3D brawling with co-op
    • Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is a 3rd person shooter where you have guns and psychic powers you use in and out of combat.
