(Sorry for the back to back posting to the community but it’s a crosspost from my Tumblr community)
Haven’t done that yet. However, remembering that I had a specific thing I need to another thing with, I just don’t know where I put it even though I have a pretty good idea where it might be. Proceed to start digging through things to find it, and while doing so, find various other items (oh, that’s where this is, I’ll have to remember this!) and then find the thing I was looking for and it’s not what I needed. Dammit.
And I’ll remember that I found the other things; I only retain the knowledge I found stuff, but I can’t remember what it was I found!
Why is no one talking about Star Trek tits
Most of the time it’s right in front of me, but my brain is just shortcutting over it.
It’s become a running gag in my house that my wife will set something down on the floor so that I can’t possibly miss it, like a laundry basket that needs to go downstairs, and I step over it without thinking.
One time, late at night, I went to my son’s bedroom to make sure he was asleep. His bed was empty. As I was leaving, I saw him asleep on the floor in the middle of the hall, which means I’d stepped over him.
Sometimes I just don’t see things.
Did your wife talk him into laying in the hallway just to test your awareness? Or did he figure he was going to prank Dad all on his own?
I think he was on his way to come tell us something, then he got tired and fell back to sleep. He’s three.
This has happened to me enough times that now when I’m looking for something I made I often gaslight myself into believing that I didn’t make it and then I’ll make another one and when I go to set it down I find the original one and I just feel like the biggest moron that ever lived.
My favorite is when I go through this, think I didn’t make it, then open the microwave to see my cup of now cold tea.
If we can make it a competition, I once lost my airplane ticket by putting it through the xray scanner. Im a fairly sterile environment, white walls and floors, one box where it could be and surrounded by guards on the lookout for anything suspicious. The closest thing to a magic trick ive ever done.
Lucky for me my wife had the tickets on the phone and the airplane crew let us on but I was shitting myself so hard.
I once lost my passport for multiple years. It was never a huge problem but I had multiple instances where it would have been beneficial to have.
Came to a head when I was traveling out of the country.
We literally tore the house apart looking for it.
It was in the printer scanner. From when it needed to be scanned for some reason, multiple years ago.
“I’m going to set this right here. That way I will definitely remember where I put it.”
Narrator: “He did not remember.”
I have set places I’ll put things for this reason. But my brain still fucks it up. Put my phone on the shelf between my folded shirts while I get dressed. Will remember to pick it up there if I do.
But if I put it ON TOP of the folded shirts instead of between the two piles. Well. Fuck me. That’s invisible. And I won’t remember I didn’t pick it up until 20 minutes later.
I had my phone with me after drying off from a shower last night. Got dressed, booted up my PS2…and my phone was suddenly not in my hand.
Maybe it was in your pocket
Nope, it was in the closet
I’m so so so glad I don’t have this problem.
I definitely lose most stuff the second I set it down, but never things like drink or food.
Because you don’t set them down?
I call it the black hole of life
I have many symptoms of ADHD, but thankfully not this one. I never really forget where I kept things, in fact I remember them in absurdly high detail. Maybe that’s a symptom too, who knows.
Either incredible username symmetry or a lazy self interaction…
something like that is what I sometimes feel for a second or two before I confirm I’m wrong, like… it’s genuinely mind-breaking in that panic before the revelation
FUCK.
Did you check drawers?
I leave mine in drawers, somehow.
