In the USA M&Ms are an imitation of what are called Smarties in the UK.

Same. I was wondering how on earth those chalky semi-tart discs were anything like chocolate.

Wait… Am I confusing them with Sweet Tarts? 🤔 One is a taffy in a Skittle like candy shell and the other is disgusting crap.

I think you may be triple confusing SweetTarts™ (chalky semi-tart disks) with Smarties™ (chalky sweet but oddly flavorless disks) and Spree™ (not as chalky, candy coated disks) which these days are more often encountered as Chewy Spree™ (Chewy candy coated disks.)

And we haven’t even mentioned Necco Wafers™ (big ol’ chalky disks) nor Giant SweetTarts™ (big ol’ semi-tart chewy disks)!

We have both in Canada. The difference is that smarties are naturally colored, whereas M&Ms are vibrant thanks to artificial colorings

Can’t say I’ve tried em, evidently 😅. Though, could be interesting just for the experience.

Had a sleeve of them on my desk prior to my above comment. Idk why people are saying they’re chalky. They’re basically just lightly flavored sugar tablets.

              …yay? 😐

As candy goes, that’s about as base-level acceptable as it gets. Was it the last thing at the bottom of a candy bowl and you settled for it?

Kids crush them into powder, and snort it like coke.

At least we did in the 80s…

US smarties are the same exact thing as Rockets elsewhere. They’re both sugary crack

Necco Wafers taste like someone took Pepto-Bismol, dehaydrated it, and formed it into discs the size of US quarters.

Compared to M&Ms, Smarties have a thicker candy layer. The chocolate is a bit better, but personally I prefer the candy/chocolate ratio in M&Ms.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
