Last day working in an office! Woo back to the field! Just in time because now I can isolate myself from people with the flu.

This post is for casual conversation if you don’t feel like making a post of your own.

I don’t have autism, but ADHD. Still I’ve worked from home since COVID except for a small stint in office and I don’t think I could ever go back. Way too overstimulating, too many distractions, they wanted me to wear slacks, a belt, and a collared shirt all day. My fidget toys aren’t seen as professional. I go to the bathroom waaay more than other people due to stress bowel issues. I’m glad I get to work from home in my pajamas just helping others with IT issues all day remotely.

What field do you work in? Any struggles with autism in the day to day?

I’m a chemical engineer. I’m AuDHD but I HATE working at home. I want to be out in the field looking at stuff. Luckily there is no dress code (apart from safety gear lol) and I’d like to see someone try and tell me my fidget toys are unprofessional…

I would probably not do well in a lot of traditional engineering environments but I have managed to carve out a niche where I am basically the troll in the basement people come to with their problems. Let’s just say neurodivergence is over represented in my field 😅

Unfortunately we (and my part of the industry) are terribly understaffed so I’ve been working myself death for the last couple of years. This has lessened my ability to mask/cope. Some of the main challenges I have are:

      • supervising people: most people I have supervised are super awesome and I’m happy to go to bat for them but once and a while I’m not so lucky.
      • delegating and saying no: for the most part no one is overseeing my work so it’s really hard to get support prioritizing. Again, there is more work than any of us can do and this leads to conflict when my peers want someone from me and I have to say sorry, we’re not going to do that.
      • over stimulation/slow processing speed: 9/10 times I manage to attempt to chair hybrid meetings in a large board room with people having side conversations and take minutes without crying but sometimes I don’t 🤷‍♀️
      • inability to lie/unbridled rage at being lied to: I work with contractors and consultants and I absolutely cannot play the game - I call out lies without realizing that’s what I’m doing and you can imagine how well that goes over. Especially from a woman. Not lying also means adding tonnes of caveats to all of my answers because if I don’t give all the context that’s lying right???

I’m a Network Engineer. I’ve managed to minimize my struggles, but they are still there.

Applying for summer internships. Or I’m supposed to be anyway. Really it’s been a lot of reading listings, hitting “save”, and then not applying.

Went to the hot pot place again today. It was nice. Went to mothers to get her old carpal tunnel devices because I need them and what she had turned out to be not that. I looked for the cat outside while we were there. Did not see. Hope someone has grabbed her and taken her inside to warm land.

I feel like I’ve forgotten how to cook as my no longer beloved noodle soups have become texturally weird and far too splashy recently and they’ve been basically all I’ve made and eaten for at least a year now.

But I found a place that makes really good vegan pizza earlier, loads of veg, no weird cheese stuff and a really chewy sourdough base, and it’s perfect. If next time is the same, this is my new safe food now and I might have to buy a mini pizza oven.

Also does describing Anthony Hopkins as a butch Patrick Stewart, make sense for anyone else? I couldn’t remember his name earlier and that was the only way I could think to describe him.
