I find this incredibly hard to believe. I suppose it depends on your age but I’m early 40’s and had many of my friends since teenage years. Kinda hard not to learn someone’s surname after that amount of time.
Not to mention I used to be on social media in the early days and so surnames were a thing there.
Easy, meet various guys in pub, chat every few weeks, repeat for 30 years. Noone ever suggests adding each other on Facebook. Actually I know very little about them, but if we’re both there at the same time we’ll talk about nothing for hours.
About 10 years ago I was in bars to frequently. I hung out at the same place with the same people for 4 years. Woman came into my life and started going up there with me sometimes, when she asked me their names I didn’t know half of their first names even. Some go by their middle name, last name or just a nick name. There was never a reason to know anyone’s name. This next comment I’m sure some will hate, but I find most people who need to know people’s names are the ones who talk about people when they aren’t around. We can talk about movies, music, pool, darts, sports, hiking, canoeing or any other hobbies and never need to know the peoples names. Never need to exchange phone numbers, social media or anything. I would go to relax and socialize, not to tie myself to more obligations.
many at some point I recall reading their last names somewhere. but you never used it and as a result if you ask me I really cannot even guess almost any one of their surenames. and these are people I hang out with irl on weekly/monthly basis. I find it funny
I dont know the last name for almost any of my friends who I’ve been hanging out with for 30+ years . xD

Exactly it. I want a light conversation with no expectations or requirements. Knowing someone’s name is not required to tick that box.

The real unknowable is my friends’ patronyms (or, if they’re from EU/US, middle names)
