These Thundermail articles posted today seem to be misleading.
Afaik Mozilla isn’t doing anything with Thunderbird as Thunderbird operates under another entity called MZLA.
Also Thunderbird has been financing itself through donations and isn’t trying to compete with Gmail but is taking direction from its users and developers.
The articles seem to have taken some quotes out of context in order to fashion some news headlines.

I don’t even see how an email client would be able to compete with with an email service.
There is news here about what Thunderbird is working on, one being webmail. It’s just that this has nothing to do with Mozilla afaik.
