I am surprised Ars didn’t mention that Amazon/Kindle recently shut down the ability to download eBooks (and by extension extract them into a format like ePub). This is a critical development when considering an e-ink device from Amazon.
That’s an issue with the Amazon services but the device itself is pretty much as capable as it was before so you can source your books elsewhere, which I think many people do. Now, if they took away their undocumented format converter that works over email, then I’d be angry. My next device won’t be a Kindle for other reasons though.
The email method still works? I thought that was being shut down as well?
I converted all my Kindle eBooks into ePub and basically gave up on the Kindle platform.
Kobo has been great, especially with Calibre and Koreader
Haven’t used it in a few months but I haven’t heard about it going away. Officially it doesn’t exist anyway :P
If it doesn’t exist officially, then the easier it is for them to remove the feature.
