Now we get AI space junk clogging up the skies. lovely.
Neuromancer IRL.
Ai slop + Ai scrap. Such a lovely combo. I’ve always been fascinated by space-stuff, but headlines like this causes me to wish for Kessler syndrome.
Where is the benefit in doing all that compute in space? AIUI radiating all that heat in a vacuum is quite hard.
The article mentions edge computing. If you’re taking your data in space, it’s easier to compute it in space than sending it back to Earth.
Instead of having to train AI models on data collected elsewhere, they could learn autonomously using whatever built in instruments.
What kind of data would you collect with these instruments?
I’m guessing we’re talking stuff like climate science and weather? Still you could collect it from satellites and then process it down here on earth.
Images as well. Wouldn’t anyone be able to receive that data packet?
