This article says audiences are annoyed actors in Odyssey are using American accents. It made me wonder… how much does it matter if actors in historical films have American accents?

Either go all in, or don’t.

And since it’s usually difficult to get everyone using the accents right, I tend to prefer not. It’s easier to dismiss their accents, than have a character suddenly show up and be unable to do the accent.

It’s like Keanu Reeves in Dracula. Hearing him say “blue inferno” in that terrible British accent makes me laugh, and it’s not supposed to be funny.

Whenever that happens, I just assume that the characters are speaking the native language at the time, but it’s being translated for the audience’s benefit.

It’s very important. Everyone knows that people always spoke with a British accent, regardless of the local language used in that period, and I hate it when movies don’t adhere to that reality. /s

Meh, I don’t hate it, but it’s also unnecessary.

And, if the language spoken in the time and place the movie is set in wasn’t English to begin with, or matters even less

Not very. It’s more important that people should have the same accent as others should.

Trying to get everyone to fake the same fake accent helps nothing.

I’d rather them just have American accents than bad attempts at other accents. Also, when you’re talking about a historical film which accent would you want to use? A modern Greek accent is not the same as an ancient Greek accent at all.
