There are also like pure graphite “pencils” that you can find in art stores that allow for this type of fat stroke.

It looks to me like graphite, you can expose more lead in a pencil using a knife and then use it kind of “sideways”. There are also like pure graphite “pencils” that you can find in art stores that allow for this type of fat stroke.
