Financially speaking S3 (a hot hatch) is a great choice that losses less in value over the years compared to most regular cars (and it’s practical, low maintenance, cheap to run).

I never had it personally, but what are the issues?
It’s just a Golf, the engines are fairly rugged four-cylinders (underspeced a bit even), just change the oil, tires, and brakes depending on your driving style. Just like on a normal version of the car (A3/Golf). Even the official service fees are low.
It’s one of the reason why they (and GTIs) are popular.
