Kind of an ephemeral thing though, isn’t it? Saints Row 1&2 were deeply influenced by the contemporary hiphop scene and limitations in game development at the time. A constant issue with these attempts at remakes and reboots is they don’t do the work that is necessary to capture the feel of the time these games were made in. How could you make a game without the ugly mid-00s bloom feel like Saints Row 2?

Oh that sounds pretty neat. I’d totally buy a Saints Row game that isn’t revolving around aliens or is the blandest and most boring reboot in the history of reboots.

Okay, I’m in the minority here, but i absolutely loved 4. It was so over the top Matrix meets SR and the game play is good enough I keep coming back to it.

I think many of us feel that way.

The thing is, I adore Saints Row 4, but I don’t think I want to play Saints Row 4 Part 2.

So I do hope they return to the style of Saints Row 3 for the next chapter.

Honestly, what I really want is Saints Row 3 again with some new plotlines and lots of car skins and dress-up options.

They should retcon everything after 3, just give us saints row 3.5 in whole new area. Fuck it, make it saints row taking over a small island country for tax reasons and just roll with it. Mix CIA into it because it’s a American vessel or some shit to make it still feel like new York or LA or whatever they need. The details aren’t important if the end picture is delivered.

If they do this, that can shut up and take my money.

I enjoyed 3, it was pretty good but some of the things were a little over the top. Such as robbing a fucking military base with only a handgun as the “first” mission. And the hoverbikes. And the mech-like tanks, etc.

4 was just too much, man.

2 was fun all the way through, I really liked that one. More of that, please.

1 I didn’t play at all sadly, might get around to it some day but I feel like it might feel very very dated.

The reboot I quit after like 10 hours, it felt so bland and boring, there was no soul there.

Tbh I need to replay 2, I can’t even remember if I actually finished it back in the day. Didn’t play 1 either, though I never really hear anyone talk about it, everyone goes straight to 2.

I do think 3 was really good, it was definitely a bit too much but they still made it work. 4 was where they took those ideas and went off the rails with it for some reason.

I was interested in the reboot until the feedback starting coming out and yeah I’m not touching that one

Thanks, yeah 3 was fun. I never played the first one and didn’t get through the second but 3 I played beginning to end a couple times just because it was one of those games where you could turn your brain off and just have fun. Great game to play after a long day of work.

Saints Row 3 was awesome, but Saints Row 4 reused the same city and added super powers. Also awesome, actually — I suspect the problem is, the ending erased the possibility of a proper sequel, so you have the “new one” feeling like some bad AI slop.

The first one was Xbox only IIRC, and kinda trash by today’s standards. It had some weird quirks like you couldn’t just get ammo, you had to get more guns or something. And it was harder than it needed to be. The second one improves things a bit, but it still hasn’t aged very well. You can get them cheap on sale on Xbox, if you have that. The second one is on PC but doesn’t work well, so I imagine in this post-Windows world, for those of us who have moved on, it’s even more inaccessible without an Xbox.

The reboot could’ve been good, there was a video documenting the original vision before they ended up with the final product. Tl;Dr They were way too ambitious and objections from the new publisher changed almost everything about the game for the worst.

SR3 was awesome if you weren’t already a saints row fan, otherwise it was a sidegrade, sometimes even a straight downgrade. The world itself is a bit flat in comparison, there’s no dynamic time of day, npc interactions are worse, and the map design isn’t as interesting. Character customization took a hit too. If only SR2 got a proper PC update from it’s now-found source code…

Good for this community being called “PC Gaming” and that usually means you trade your privacy for access to more games.

Would be even cooler if that “now-found source code” meant people on Linux and Mac could play as well. Even if I could install Windows for ARM on my Mac… Yeah, I think the Xbox is the better route there.

Anyway, meat of the problem is, SR1 and SR2 are kinda a dated type of game. They appeal to a certain sort, but their issues are too big for, as you say, one who wasn’t already a SR fan. Those who were, that’s something they like about the game, and I wouldn’t take it from them. They were there (in the fandom) first and have a right to enjoy the game mostly as they remember it. Like the idea of taking Fallout 1 and 2 and porting them into the 3/New Vegas engine. Noble idea, but the turn-based guys don’t want it and I respect that.

I’ve been hoping for a grounded reboot since the third game. SR2 had my favorite story in the series. I didn’t need to see the gang turn into an empire.

Just give me a found family story about goofy assholes turned ride or die comrades fighting other gangs and maybe a corrupt local law enforcement agency or something. I don’t need futuristic fighter jets or superpowers, just solid gameplay, fun good guys and bad guys, and a good sense of progression that ends with the Saints being capable but not ridiculously overpowered.

The 3rd one never took itself seriously. They knew it was a last hurrah and went over the top intentionally. There’s a dubstep gun ffs. They were there for the ride not storytelling.

I have to giggle, as an old fuck, because, once, this series was solid, but a purposeful offbrand niche of GTA. Since the corpos Skyrim’ed GTA there is an actual opportunity for the once, silly, to shine. Life’s a trip.
