From an outsider’s perspective, Japanese culture seems to foster a mutual respect for one another as well as for one’s community and environment.
On the contrary, America seems to idealize treating people with contempt unless there’s something you would want from them. Our society is very transactional and if you have nothing of interest to show for yourself then you have no worth to anybody and deserve no respect.
I know this is all a big generalization of two societies consisting of millions of people and this isn’t to say that everybody behaves the same way across both societies. But when you have a general behavior across a society then it’s no surprise that a significant portion of that society will adapt that behavior.
Same here! Though I took a 6-month break in between quitting Reddit and joining Lemmy. I remember hoping it would amount to a feeling of liberation but in reality I just felt out of touch with world events and started scrolling through my Google feed instead, which sucked…
Stressed. It feels like the world is falling apart around me. It’s like we’re speed running our own destruction. I’m ready for some peace.

Beyond supporting local businesses, Starbucks’ coffee is just objectively poor quality in comparison to that of any local roster.
I’ve been saying for the past decade that I think the federal government holds way too much power and needs to dissolve. The country is too big for how centralized the power is and the states cannot effectively satisfy their constituents’ needs when they’re so beholden to federal interests. I love the state and city that I live in and I don’t want to have to move across the world in order to live somewhere with sane politics but I’m sick of progress here being delayed because so many of our resources are going to the federal government and being compromised by the interests of the other 98% of the country.
Encryption should be no more a crime than locking your house or storing your valuables in a safe.

Jumping to Linux for sure. The hardest part is going to be finding time to learn it first…
Or how about you just stop buying from that cancerous blight on our society altogether?
They need the talking heads on Fox News to tell them how to answer that question first.
Because the stock market isn’t a measure of how well a country is operating. On the contrary, deregulation allows companies to boost profit via harmful means. Rich people got it good under Trump/Republicans and therefore the stock market thrives until disaster strikes and it all comes crashing down.
I’m a senior software dev that uses AI to help me with my job daily. There are endless tools in the software world all with their own instructions on how to use them. Often they have issues and the solutions aren’t included in those instructions. It used to be that I had to go hunt down any references to the problem I was having though online forums in the hopes that somebody else figured out how to solve the issue but now I can ask AI and it generally gives me the answer I’m looking for.
If I had AI when I was still learning core engineering concepts I think shortcutting the learning process could be detrimental but now I just need to know how to get X done specifically with Y this one time and probably never again.
Objects like an unbreakable stick are still composed of atoms suspended in space and held together by the fundamental forces of nature. When you push on one end, the other end doesn’t immediately move with it but rather the object experiences a wave of compression traveling through it. This wave of compression travels faster than we can perceive but still cannot travel faster than light.
Look up why arrows bend after they’ve been released by a bow, it’s essentially the same mechanic.
I can’t pick a favorite. Every day I’ve got a different song stuck in my head so whatever that is I suppose. I’ll say, Andrew Bird whistles a lot in his music and whenever he’s on I’ll whistle along with him.
I can whistle really well
I stopped using Spotify long ago because of their shitty business practices. Producing a product they killed support for within just a couple years without reimbursing customers and producing huge amounts of e-waste. Jacking their subscription prices twice in one year. Apparently, they also donated to Trump despite not being an American company?? That’s to say nothing of their shitty recommendation algorithm, which just plays your most played tracks over and over. Good riddance.
For those interested, I use Tidal now. I’m satisfied with, their recommendation algo is fine and the higher quality streaming is really nice but nothing I’ve used has ever been as good as Google Play Music, I found so much good music though that service and could upload whatever I was missing. Once Tidal inevitably pisses me off, I’m going to move on to self hosting.
