  • If we were more civically engaged as a population it would not have gotten this bad.

Yes and no. Yes, if everyone fought tirelessly for years to force our politicians to actually represent us then our system could be much better. But, our system is so deeply and unfathomably undemocratic / corrupt that it is cruel and unfair to put all the blame on the people. Humans are finite creatures so pouring more of our life into politics takes it from other aspects of our life. If everyone is over worked and exhausted then they often don’t have time for politics.

  • Nah… no matter what they do, people - especially Americans, are too lazy and apathetic to care.

Apathetic is the key word there. And can you really blame Americans for being apathetic? In 2008, Democrats promised to give us socialized healthcare and the people showed up in record numbers. We gave Democrats complete control over the House, Senate, and Executive branch. And what happened? Nothing. They made up countless excuses on why they couldn’t help us so our healthcare system stayed as broken as ever.

Last year, what did Harris promise to do to help us if she won? Nothing. She wouldn’t endorse socialized healthcare for all, she wouldn’t support free college for all, she wouldn’t promise to connect all the major US cities by high speed rail, or to mandate that all working Americans have a minimum of 2 weeks of paid vacation each year + paid sick days, etc.

US politicians don’t give a shit what the American people want. They don’t even try to pretend anymore like they will help us. Instead, all they do is claim the other party will be more damaging. So yes, we are apathetic but that is because we live under a corporate dictatorship.

  • Yeah, so anyway, what can’t I get in the Play Store or the App Store that I actually want?

When I upgraded my Samsung to a OnePlus13, Samsung’s app that manages the tag device flat out had an error message telling me that it could only work on Samsung phones. 5 minutes later I found an open source app allowed me to use the Galaxy tag that I paid for on my new phone. Samsung has some of the best engineers in the world so they were 100% lying or intentionally trying to brick my tag device to either force me to buy their overpriced phones…

And that is just one example. I use tons of open source apps. For almost any useful app you can think of, there is a free open source version. Premium-YouTube? Newpipe is ad-free with all the premium features for free.

  • A little, yeah. I grew up hating Stalin and favored Trotsky, but the more I learned about the eastern front the more I have to wonder if the USSR would have survived the Nazi invasion if Stalin hadn’t forced them to industrialize so aggressively. Without Stalin, it is possible that the Nazis took Moscow in 1942 and without most of the Wehrmacht stuck on the eastern front, I doubt that the US would have sacrificed a million men to force open a western front. It is possible without Stalin that the Nazis would have ruled Europe for decades.

  • Nicht wahr. I failed my first Discrete Math exam trying to teach myself using only the provided resources (professor, text book, notes, etc). The only reason I passed with a C was because I was able to watch lectures from better professors on YouTube.

I have also used YouTube to fix my car and many other things. Old Reddit (corporate social media) was a very valuable resource of knowledge.

Every single human accomplishment of note was only made possible through social bonds and social collaboration. We need each other. We need tight knit communities, but since so much of the soul of our race has been eroded by capitalist zombie consumerism and the atomization of individuals through car dependent urban sprawl, we are sometimes forced to rely on social media to meet that need.
