Goofy Nintendo music. Love the whimsy.

But lately my brain has switched to working better while listening to podcasts, so I’ve been working through a bunch of radio plays. I’m currently on Video Palace, while also going through The White Vault with a friend. I think Unwell is next and then Alice Isn’t Dead, maybe.

Not music, but I really like coffee shop noises if I’m struggling to focus up. Random barista sounds, indiscernible chatter, light but pleasant clinking of spoons and cups. There are YouTube & podcast channels that have like 8 hours solid.

    Metal. Anything metal.

But lately I’ve been going through Chevelle, album-by-album. They are one of my all-time favorite bands though, so that helps.

My curated playlist of entirely “nerdcore”, which is music inspired by (but not directly from), anime and video games.

I play either the Deus Ex UNATCO Theme Extended or the extended map theme from Mass Effect on repeat

Edit to add that after 15 or 20 minutes I’m zoned in and forget the music is playing

Aye, I have playlists for all kinds of concentration related things. If I’m writing, I put on ambient music that fits with the tone and doesn’t have singers who sing with words.

If I’m just drawing, I can listen to literally any genre of music, but it had to be appropriate for the vibe I’m trying to catch.

These playlists are only for longer projects with a bigger investment.

If it’s shorter projects or projects at work that only takes me a few days or weeks to complete I tend to put on videos of people talking. The topics and formats don’t really matter. I put on whatever interests me at the moment.

Currently I’m in a phase where I just need some dumb shit while I’m working and I’m therefore deep in some youtube drama that most people don’t care about, but I find to be very very entertaining, even though it’s pretty fucked up.

    You guys can concentrate?! 🤨

Joking aside though, I find it more difficult to concentrate with music on, unless the task is something that grabs my focus anyway. I’m waiting on a diagnosis, but it feels like it’s either the autistic side not liking the distraction, or the ADHD side focusing on the wrong thing 😫

What kind of music it is definitely makes a difference for me. Sometimes if I need to focus really hard, I have to turn on something instrumental otherwise I’ll get distracted by the lyrics/singing along in my head.

Not a playlist but if I need to tune out the outside world and my own brain, I usually go for psytrance. It’s stupid and repetitive enough not to grab my attention, but varied enough I don’t bore out.

I also tried techno/schranz but it’s too repetitive, and I enjoy synthwave too much to focus.

Not to be disparaging but… most psytrance sounds the same. Any 24/7 radio should do the trick.

I do however have recommendations for synthwave

Carpenter Brut and Perturbator are amongst my favorite artists. OG French synthwave projects along with Kavinsky, but darker and more aggressive than most.

Mega Drive is always a safe bet, along with Dance with the Dead, Laserpunk or DEADLIFE.

For a more '80s-pop sound, you might enjoy Fury Weekend.

Not synthwave by very adjacent, I’m a huge fan of Master Boot Record and Keygen Church (same guy), but it’s more metal but played by a SoondBlaster 16 sound card from the '90s.

Excellent recommendations here. I’d add Magic Sword, Thomas Barrandon, and Daniel Deluxe to go with these.

My work usually means I can’t listen to anything while I’m working (lots of meetings and video calls), but when I need to just head down get something done I listen to this lo fi beats playlist my wife made. It’s also great for reading while in a plane.
