I can buy the normally very deliciously painful spicy stuff from Walmart now, instead of the pan Asian supermarket. I’ve noticed that it seems to taste wayyyy less spicy. It feels closer to a hot Cheetos spicy than the proper actually painful way it used to taste.

You’re probably building up more tolerance to it. That or they changed the formula for the US market. They seem to taste the same to me.

People don’t seem to realise you will build up a tolerance. My ex used to buy large bags of pickled hot jalapeños. Initially he could eat one or two, after a while he’d eat the entire bag without sweating.

We used to complain when my mother added a teaspoon of sambal to the nasi, now she adds two tablespoons.

Or you can just eat a 1 million scoville pepper from tesco’s because “why would they put the legit shit in fucking tescos lmao”.

I spent the next few hours wondering if I should go to the hospital because my digestive tract felt like it was being stung by bees.

After that, no spice can phase me.

Eyy malay/indo friend. How I miss good nasi and I never learned how to make the nicer nadi dishes. I crave nasi padang, nasi goreng, nasi lemak… I’m salivating now. I blame you.

I really need things to be habeñero level at least. Sometimes I’ve gotten a grinder of dried ghost chiles to get things up to snuff.

I kinda want a jar of ground scorpion pepper. Ghost peppers and carolina reapers just taste like how gasoline smells to me, scorpions taste fruity for their heat

A mix of that and tomato paste, fish oil, garlic, ginger would probably mix things up for you.

Just someone else jumping in to comment here, but I’ve had stomach ulcers since my late 20’s in direct response to mildly acidic food. Got even worse when I went abroad and caught a severe stomach virus, due to which I now have to take stomach meds on the regular.

Funnily enough, all the while I’ve been able to chomp away on hot chiles without the slightest inconvenience. I guess different guts = different microflora / fauna mixes.

Pretty sure they found out ulcers are due to a bacteria that can now be treated and not due to spicy or acidic foods.

I’m guessing you’re thinking of Helicobacter pylori, but even with a diagnosis, treatment can still be elusive. For one thing because a heavy dose of multiple antibiotics can be a lot for the body to deal with, and personally I’m guessing that with mounting resistance to such, sometimes they flat-out won’t work, anyway.

Meanwhile, cutting down on gut acidity and building a good biome seem to be best for the long haul.

In any case, IME spicy and acidic foods can absolutely exacerbate the situation.

You’ve probably gotten used to it. You could add some gochugaru or chili oil or something to kick it up.
