Some people who use my Jellyfin server have access through Roku. The Roku client doesn’t use the user language preferences and has been slow to gain Jellyfin features. They would like to replace it with something that can access Jellyfin and conventional streaming services. What do you recommend? FOSS is preferred but not required. Same for raspberry pi options.
if you do android tv you can use android debloater on it to make it less shit
Formuler tv box with the fladder app, or normal jellyfin android tv app when fladder stumbles
Honestly as much as I hate google, Chromecast has been a pretty flawless jellyfin experience.
4k AV1 support (though I only have a 720p TV, so I got the full HD version), and the jellyfin client is one of the best and most updated.
In the 5 year future I want to be able to have a cheap N100 box (pis are too expensive and under powered in video, maybe the new RISCV SBUs will beef up decoding and be perfect for that a few revisions later) and then throw Plasma Bigscreen on it when it matures and have a fully FOSS streamer, but that won’t work well now.
It was actually a good choice, as the 4k one doesn’t support AV1 for some weird reason.
Mine died and I replaced it with the TV Streamer and been very happy with it.Yeah it’s Google and the HW is barely better, but the codec support and upgraded remote are awesome.
Plays anything I throw at it with ease.
I host on a N100 and it is really good with transcoding files for older devices.Maybe it’s because I have a very old Chromecast. But my Jeffyfin+Chromecast experience is far from flawless. It has quite a few random stutter problems. Disconnects between JF on phone and Chromecast… Subtitles not rendered properly or double rendered on top of each other (and too few customization options)… Poor support for codecs so a lot of transcoding needed (which I think is the cause of the aforementioned stuttering, but I’m not sure). Compared to the android TV or web app it’s really not that good imho.
Yeah there is a world of difference between the microusb gen 1 and the newer AV1 enabled ones.
The old ones literally didn’t have their own OS IIRC, you could only cast to them which caused a ton of issues.

Really? I have one of the old ones and I have no issues casting to it (though I don’t use subtitles).
I do have issues casting web streams, but that happens even if I transcode on my phone, so I don’t think it’s the Chromecast’s issue.
Hmm I put off getting a different Chromecast as I didn’t think it would matter. With newer ones you mean the Google TV ones? Or also the Ultra(?) one? I really don’t like what android/Google TV has become. But I can always just put flauncher on it with just JF.

4k high bitrate files play easily.Your server of course matters, so make sure it’s up to the task.
I picked up an N100 box and put Bazzite on it. The HTPC build of Bazzite wasn’t working well for me and I don’t like the Kodi menu system compared to the Jellyfin UI. Regular Bazzite it is for now. I will be jumping to Plasma Bigscreen at the first chance. Honestly if I could just boot to the Jellyfin UI, I would be a happy camper.
onntv has google tv certified devices with current gen models available at walmart for under $20 and will blow any roku away. Replace the stock launcher with projecticity and throw in smartertube for adfree youtube and youre all set.
I run F-launcher on an onn4k but if you get one of the right patch version from eBay (Roughly 35$) you can just load a lineage os ROM onto it
I use an older Pi (can’t remember the model) running LibreELEC + Jellyfin client + the Kodi Sync Queue plugin on the server. Jellyfin takes over the entire Kodi library on the client. Control is via CEC from the TV.
My understanding is that Raspberry Pis are not great value anymore if you don’t need the GPIO pins, so there may be a more affordable Single Board Computer out there that will run LibreELEC. Maybe even x86.
I’m also trying an Apple TV 4K which I got on sale. It works well, and there’s a free Jellyfin client app in addition to a couple of pay ones, but I haven’t figured out how to configure my universal remote so I don’t need the Apple remote.I got one for free, it didn’t have a remote. Found some on scamazon for cheap, and they are definitely that but they work great. I say they because they were so cheap I figured I’d end up with duds so I got more than one, turns out even though they’re basically made of paper they’re actually pretty good. Maybe just not for a little kid.
There are Android Open Source Project (AOSP) builds of Android TV for Raspberry Pi.
And I bet someone gets a very nice TV setup for Jellyfin perfected in about a month after the Steam Machine hits the market.

What’s wrong with Roku?
Nothing really… I just have a bone to pick with data harvesting corporations in general. I especially don’t appreciate my leisure time being monitored/analyzed/etc. and that seems to be their whole purpose.

FireTV is cancer for streaming boxes; Roku isn’t too horrible.

What features do you see as missing?
The client uses Roku’s built-in language capabilities. If they set their language on the Roku device, the client will use that language.
It doesn’t override a forced language. If an episode has English and Russian and Russian is forced for some reason the web client can override it if the option is selected. I don’t know of any missing features right now but it didn’t have skip intro for a while after Jellyfin got it.
