It pains me to even post this here but apparently the xbox is “retro” now. oh boy.
Anyway - my problem. I thought for sure that OG xbox games would work on a 360s, as long as they were on the backward compatible list. well, my luck, none of the ones i got work and they’re all on the list. I tried updating the 360 from a flash drive, it won’t detect the update. I can’t find a menu option to update. I would rather not connect it to my internet to update either if possible.
I tried reformatting the flash drive on the xbox itself then moving the update folder to it, that didn’t work, neither did formatting on the pc first either. I cleared the cache of the xbox hard drive (it has an official M$ 250GB drive).
It is not modded in any way.
Anyone have a fix for the manual usb update? This is a glossy xbox 360 Slim, for reference.
Update: literally the only way it would work was by creating a stupid xbox live account and logging in so it would download the update. the 7 mb update i also tried burning onto disc and flash drive, wouldn’t take either one. Going to really suck when all those servers shut down. Thanks for your help yall
The system update needs to be on a FAT32 drive without a label. The label shouldn’t matter. The update needs to look like a single folder on the root of the drive called $SystemUpdate. Plug it in, reboot the console.
If your console is modded it will specifically stop that process unless you rename that folder, but if you don’t know what you are doing then don’t mess with anything that touches the nand. Updating a modded box is its own process.
Also, just a fair warning, the Xbox compatibility files don’t come from a system update anyway, you need to use a program like Xploder to add the compatibility partition to your drive and manually copy it over. You should take some time and read up on SevenSins how to proceed.
Yeah looks like i need to find a dumb windows pc to do it. Darn. Id just buy an og Xbox since they are cheap but I have way too many consoles as is
You can get the game compatibility update here. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12129
Is there a reason you don’t want to just connect it to your internet though? I feel like that would be the easiest way if you want it to be up to date anyways.
I actually tried and it would connect but I couldn’t log into my account. I hate giving m$ a fraction of my time sl id rather use the USB router but I think I may need to partition the drive rather than just update.
This is why Playstation is the better console!
The instructions to update via flash drive seem pretty clear that there’s no option it just does it when it restarts
https://support.xbox.com/en-SG/help/xbox-360/console/system-updates-info
Exactly, and mine never does. It never pops up…it sees the flash drive in the device menu just fine
And you started the .zip file directly onto the root of a fat 32 formatted flash drive?
Sure did, multiple times and different flash drives
I just looked, and maybe I do have the newest update? My dash is 2.0.17559.0 . I am not sure if the dashboard version matters…i just dont get how it can even read the disc name and know the game but not launch
Coming from someone who struggled to update my cars infotainment system. exFAT is not the same as FAT32 lmao.
Haha all good, its fat32. I think it may be the hdd In The Xbox needing partition 2 for the emulator.
Are you sure it’s not the discs themselves? Turns out, DVDs are a dogshit archival medium.
Nope theyre fine, the Xbox can even See what game it is. The error says this Xbox cant play this without an update
Makes me really hate m$ even more.
I actually have no issues with dvds myself. Ive been safe from disc rot so far
It’s been awhile since I thought about this.
But my understanding is that it doesn’t play the game from the disc. It only uses it to confirm proof of purchase and downloads a version of the game that will work.
Thats extra stupid
Looks like it’s a bit of both worlds. The software for running them came separate. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12129
But they also revoked some games and this process might not work anymore. Can’t test it
That’s what the current gen xbox one and series do- disc for reference, download actual game. The 360 playing older OGs still plays from the disc without download/internet. ….at least that’s been my experience. Last time i used my 360 to play OG xbox games there was no internet or downloads involved.
You were probably fortunate enough to have a console with the software emulator.
A quick look into it this morning said Microsoft offered these discs for people stuck without internet.

They also offered: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12129
Huh, neat. Ive never seen that disc before. FWIW, i had 3 different 360s, but I dont remember which ones i would have used Og xbox games on. Likely my first one- it was the original larger style that was prone to RROD, but was purchased a few years after the 360 had been released. My other two were the later slim version. I dont have specific model numbers…the only 360 i still have has been in storage for a few years now in a different country, so i couldnt even go mess with right now if i wanted to 😅
Retro consoles shouldn’t have hard drives, or internet access.
You put the cartridge in, you turn the power on, and you sip your capri sun because it’s 1990, and you’re 7 years old, and the world isn’t a dumpster fire.
Time to play super mario bros 3, as was the style at the time.
The original Xbox is older now than Super Mario Bros 3 was when the Xbox came out.
Almost twice as old, actually.
Hey man, just because it’s right doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.
Youre correct lol.
I only have it cuz it came with the n64.
Xbox 360 was right when Enshittification started getting unbearable.
But yes my Genesis is definitely fun
It started with the fucking avatars
Then the microtransactions came, and i didnt use microtransactions, so I said nothing…
