JayzTwoCents has had it rough with Linux lately… join me as we review his latest Linux video for commentary and criticism.
Save your minutes, skip all reaction videos.
No offense to Jay, but he seems to be a bit bone headed more often than not with things he’s not familiar with and refuses to research or get outside help when he needs it.
He can make great hardware/watercooled builds and overclock really well, but any video outside that skill set is just… Painful.
I somewhat agree with this.
Personally I view Jay as the better version of Linus from LTT but still in the same camp of “I dunno if I should fully trust his info”.
No offense to Jay. I think he’s genuinely trying to learn and my opinion of him was improved after he asked GN’s Steve and crew in trying to improving their benchmarking process.
If possible I would still prefer if he delayed making some vids about topics outside his field of expertise until he had a good foundation to talk from.
Sort of like:
Late is just for a little while, suck is forever.’ Right?
- Gabe Newell
Great quote from Gabe there, very true indeed.
I would agree with that. Gamer’s Nexus is setting the standard on how to do benchmarks right. Jay is only marginally better at it than a random guy with a webcam and a bedroom rig.
Jay is good for the builds and side projects, yes. I don’t bother watching his hardware reviews.
And yes, the variance between his Windows and Linux benchmarks seems too large.
I’ve seen that kind of thing out of Linus Sebastian too, with the infamous 30 day Linux challenge, and I remember when they took a young woman on their staff who was there as I think a graphic designer and they had her spec out and build a PC with no coaching.
Chin first no reading no help no think only send. Color me not impressed.
Do things like that, but have someone experienced do some coaching.
And of course I know why Linus does that. Rage bait gets clicks and engagement online. Tale as old as time. But it definitely makes for terrible content for people like us who actually value the technical accuracy.
Does anyone actually have any evidence that the benchmarks are wrong? If raytracying is enabled I can definitely see there being that much of a pref gap.
Ugh another “reaction video”. Downvote and make original material.
Wouldn’t call it a reaction video. It’s a commentary on a video.
It’s not the dumb shit where someone watches a movie and then “reacts” lol.
Fair enough, I just can’t imagine for me anything Jay could have put in that video that I would need any commentary done on it. Jay is a Windows/hardware guy making a Linux video for fun, trying to make it something it isn’t is disingenuous, and if I even knew who this guy was I would avoid his content going forward as he clearly is scrapping the bottom of the barrel.
But I guess to each their own, a lot of people watch the slop which is why the bots/AI bros are flooding YouTube with videos. This is just one more video added to the mix.
L take, honestly.
These “reaction videos” are just a step above the bot slop videos. They contribute nothing of value and watching them helps to hurt the platform and overall quality of videos for everyone. But sure, I’m the “L” for expecting a higher standard.
I mean - kind of? I do agree a lot of “reaction” content is bottom-of-the barrel shit, but it’s not like this one is just making funny faces and going “woaaah, nonono, they didn’t!!” or something. He does use the video as a jumping off point for his own commentary, providing his own perspectives (those segments are also edited with cuts, showing this wasn’t just turning their webcam on and rambling without any evaluation later). Just roughly looking through the preview thumbnails hovering over the video progress bar, easily more than 50% is talking about topics in the reacted video without even the reacted-to footage on screen.
But who even cares that much about Jay doing a Linux video? Jay isn’t known as a Linux guru, or even a Linux novice. He makes Windows centric gaming videos around the latest PC hardware. Him doing a video on Linux is the same as Linus (LTT) doing a Linux challenge, if watching it knowing you’re not going to see anything of real value go ahead, but making a “reaction video” about it is just chasing clicks and should not be rewarded.
Just another L take.
Your argument is solid, you are absolutely a connoisseur of low effort videos.
Basically what you are saying is public commentary of foreign work should not exist or at least should not get any attention and unless you realize why this is bad, you can’t be argued with.
Not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying low effort “reaction videos” based on a video that is outside of a content creator’s normal subject matter expertise is a waste of time and should not be given the amount of attention everyone seems to be.
If this was actually public commentary I would have no issue, my issue is this video is no better than the bot/AI slop videos flooding YouTube.

That’s not what you were saying.

Not sure you needed to duplicate the entire video description as it’s mostly self promo.
Really just the chapters is actually useful for the vid
I’m temporarily downvoting primarily because the majority of the post’s quotes aren’t useful or relevant for Gardiner’s vid.
It just copies the video description automatically when your cross-post, but I deleted it manually now.
Fair enough and thanks!
I’ve removed my downvote👍
