Quake’s “movement that takes skill” is actually a bug players have been exploiting for decades. Strafe-Jumping, Overbounce, Wall-Running, etc. are all exploits. They are entirely unintended. This also applies to game engines that derive from Quake source, such as GoldSource and Source games.
