    Ugh this and it’s exhausting!

My mind: let’s use Linux to cut down telemetry and get some control over the distractions on my pc. (That’s a couple of weeks research rabbit hole, which could have been just one DL and install)

Now let’s do the phone (still going on)

Let’s host an rpg (jup, all the effort)

    Let’s write an album…

For once I’d like my mind to go “hey I love going for a walk or doing yoga”.

Aquariums ! A perfect money and time sink. With the added advantage of hard to discard/sell elements that nobody wants after that. A real treat !

Wish it was that easy… the heart wants what it wants. Just can’t “get into things” like that. I have to like it.

Motorcycles. Just got into motorcycles after a decade of scooters… Oh god, the safety gear, the consumables, the accessories… It never ends.

Honestly computer and gaming are pretty cheap as far as hobbies go. The best possible consumer-grade PC you can get is a few thousand dollars at most

Now 3D printing sounds more expensive, but I don’t have nearly as much knowledge there :3

For what is essentially top-of-the-line gear? Yes. That is cheap. Remember, I am talking about the upper limit here. As in, there’s no more money you can reasonably spend than that, as you won’t get any further benefit. Top-of-the-line GPU, CPU, 64GB of RAM, the best OLED you can get, extra budged for cheaper elements such as additional side monitors, etc. in practice you can get by with much less

I mean, just look at the prices of any other hobby. Hobbies aren’t cheap! A “fun” car and its mantainance isn’t cheap. And what about a really good bike? Or a good instrument and music lessions? A small fishing boat, with fishing gear, and a way to transport and store it all, won’t cost little either. We could even talk about practical hobbies such as woodworking, working with metal, leather working, but those definitively can be very expensive, especially in material costs. And especially if you include the space they require as part of the price.

You need to keep in mind maintenance costs, or the money it takes to partake in hobbies over time, as well. For video games this is low compared to other hobbies. Even I, who considers video games to be my main hobby, rarely spend more than a few tens of dollars a month on new games on average, and I feel like I play new stuff constantly. A lot of the games I like to play are simply not AAA prices, I play replayable/long-playable games I already own a good amount, and I simply don’t have enough time to play through games quickly enough to spend more

Of course, you can do a lot of hobbies cheaply, but not if you go for high-end stuff. You can do video games cheaply as well. You probably need a computer for work anyway, so spend like 200$ extra, and you got something that can play a lot of interesting games.

I just started film photography. It costs about $1 per photo, more for better film, and I’m on track to shoot a roll every 3 days.

Do you develop your own film? If youre just starting out you could probably get an old entry level dslr and a stock lense pretty cheap to teach yourself what all the settings do on a film camera

I picked up a Nikon FM2 with 50mm lens recently. I thought about shooting black and white, but I love color too much. I’m currently shooting Cinestill 800t. Next up is Kodak Gold 200, then maybe I’ll try Porta 400. Kinda just exploring film stocks to see what I like. Seems most of the cost comes from developing, so I’m not too stressed about the higher end film. I might still try black and white, but mostly to learn how developing the film + scanning works. If all goes well, I might get into medium format in a few years.

I’m very fortunate to have a good job. These types of purchases feel like I’m investing in learning the art of film. But I’ll keep shooting digital too to balance the budget.

Edit: I haven’t looked up with film stocks cost more to develop, so I may regret the more expansive film

Enjoy yourself! I’ve never wanted to spend the coin to develop film, but I do have a cheap 35mm point and shoot, it’s nice but I’d still rather be able to shoot 2500 photos in an afternoon haha

That’s the other thing is going through 2500 photos stresses me out lol. I’m excited to embrace the creative constraint. Btw, I’d love to see a photo you’ve taken if you’re willing to share!

That’s not a bad idea. I’m guessing they are more equipped to develop color film. Honestly I’d been be open to taking a college class on film if that class exists near me. I think education is worth investing in.
