They usually get a set amount payable on submitting a final draft, or a salary. Which, if it’s an ego project, might be more lucrative than a percentage of profits.
Or they get to the bottom of things and get run over.

It is a flat fee. Either a publisher or a private commission. The fee will range from 6 figures for the top writers to low 5 figures.

It’s definitely not 50/50, there would be a negotiated amount (Fixed or percentage) less than that. The ghostwriter may be employed by the publisher and just receive a salary too.
I think they’re usually paid by the word. They don’t get residuals.
