So not “on purpose” but I bet they’re not sad if it happens “accidentally.”
“No plans, but if an update should render them non-functional that’s just a happy little accident.”
So, just to clarify, this is not about third party docks that weren’t working with Switch 2 at all, but those that were working but stopped after the latest console update. According to the article some of the dock providers have already pushed the update that fixes it. Apparently some people had issue with official dock too, but restating the console fixed that.
They said they had no intention of hindering or invalidating ‘legal’ 3rd party docks, where ‘legal’ could be interpreted as “authorized by Nintendo”, which could mean they have every intention of hindering every dock they don’t approve of or get a cut of sales of.
Yeah, like those Power A Switch controllers that were officially licensed by Nintendo but weren’t Nintendo brand controllers.
Plausible deniability.
So not “on purpose”
Inventing and implementing non-standard protocol messages to initiate the display is 100% on purpose. It would be easier to just source an off the shelf board and merely design casing around it.
