I thought we hated “toxic masculinity.” So, why are we giving the most toxically masculine Disney character EVER a full movie?
My question is more why can’t a piece of shit stay that way. Everybody is asking for a redemption arc. I would rather have a movie of a new character or one that doesn’t need a 180 to lead a movie.
Yeah this is one of the reasons I stopped watching The House of the dragon show, one reason. Not everybody needs a tragic misunderstood reason for being bad guys. Sometimes people are allowed to be the villain. Let villains exist. They certainly exist in the real world don’t know why they’re trying to hide it in fantasy.
We aren’t too keen on puppy murderers either, but Cruella got her moment.
if they can pull of a fun redemption arc, why not
Because he’s hilarious, and there’s always room for a redemption arc.
It’s one hour and forty five minutes long and it’s just a bunch of savage rapes followed by a gruesome snuff scene and then the credits rolled. No music aside from a jaunty tune during the cheery opening credits and a similarly jaunty song during the ending credits.
The only way this could possibly be good is Taika Watiti directing, have it starring Chris Hemsworth as Gaston, Rhys Darby as LeFou, and make it a subversive takedown of alpha male culture.
Please don’t get my hopes up

Why? Whhhyyy? Gaston doesn’t need to be redeemed. He’s enjoyable because he wasn’t evil, just wrong and… stupid. Small chunks. He does not need to be made it o anything else. Ughhhh
Maybe it’s a sequel where he becomes a feminist after learning valuable lessons from Belle?
That sounds awesome!
I’m the beauty and the beast that guy got screwed. Nobody survives a fall like that.
Of course they are. All Disney does is recycle existing IP. Cartoon/musical cartoon/stage musical/live action non musical film/live action film musical/spin off/re-imagining/sequel/prequel…
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Meh, I have no faith Disney will responsibly handle the screamingly obvious gay subtext to Gaston and LeFou. At best, some coy hints at it while staying minimal enough they don’t have to cross the MAGA nuts
Aside from the one or two throwaway lines in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, I never got that feeling from them. Maybe I just also haven’t seen the animated movie in about 20-25 years or so.
Lol looks like Vanth crossed the MAGA nuts! Downvoting this is some reddit behavior 🤣
Those MAGA nuts can’t touch my chill. I exist on an instance that has downvotes disabled.
Cruella was a pretty good film, but for a few over the top ridiculous Dalmatians scenes, but it was overall a fun film.
I never saw Maleficent, but it got a sequel, so it was probably at least OK.
A Gaston film, presumably young Gaston film, could be interesting. I assume some percentage of the town he lives in probably worked or had a close relationships with people in the castle. If they just disappeared one day, or if Gaston was brought in from afar to save/protect the little town, there is plenty of room for story there.
Agreed - I have not the slightest interest in Disney’s live action direct remakes, but I don’t mind seeing more “villain’s perspective” stories. They at least offer something a little different than what we’ve already seen. Maleficent was pretty solid as well, though the sequel was a big disappointment for me.
