in the 90s I had to get a job really quick and figured the grocery store would be a good job for a while

so I make it to the interview and am asked to take a pee test. I probably smoked weed a couple times a week for months before the test. I figured that I wasn’t going to get the job and didn’t really think about it until the manager asked for a second interview, I though sweet I might get the job

lol the second interview was the manager beating around the bush that he knew my drug test was a fail but he was going to give me a chance if I put in the effort. LOL I think I surprised him by not giving a shit about the drug test and I think I told him at one point that working hours are for working and thats what got me the job

he never talked about that afterwards, I worked there for a couple years. it was a good experience

but from my experience the day drinking employees were a bigger problem then the people who smoked weed on their own time

one guy would bring two beers in his lunch box and drink those during his lunch and then drink two more before driving home after his shift

The last time a job drug-tested me, I was honest. I told the management about my weed use. Their response? “I don’t think the test even looks for that.”

It was a saliva test, btw. Instead of peeing in a cup, I had to hold this weird test stick in my mouth for a minute. I passed.

I thankfully live in a legal state, so my boss is pretty aware I smoke off work hours. Then again, it’s a company of like 5 people, so transparency is pretty essential there.

do you also tell your boss what kind of laundry detergent you use? How is it any of their business what you do in your free time?

It isn’t. I’ve never been this open in any of my previous jobs. I wouldn’t say it’s normal. In this rare case, we all actually enjoy our time around each other and work as a proper team.

This was absolutely a diamond in the rough situation.

same, my state is Washington St

people will randomly talk about now, even at work

just yesterday a guy was laughing about the edibles he ate recently, out of the blue

like that guy is not the typical type you’d expect to add it to the conversation around the water cooler

Once weed became state legal here, I’m pretty sure the food workers union got it so you can’t be fired for partaking on one’s own time. No showing up to acme wasted though.

Nobody cares if you smoke weed unless you’re operating heavy equipment. Then it could be a liability, you might not be insurable. If you’re doing harder drugs, that’s a common precursor to theft, so the grocery store would like to know.

Only places testing for weed are government, maybe finance, and security clearance jobs. Nobody else gives a shit if you smoke weed.
