“That’s too bad, because you and I are going to have a long talk about politics after we make it out of the water. Then we’re going to follow that up with a delightful chat about the value of critical thinking and a good education.”

There’s a Swedish children’s book that I wish would get translated into English. It’s about a little girl born and raised in a cult, and it depicts the actual harm caused to the children, and also her journey of questioning authority and evaluating the trustworthiness of information. I think a lot of Swedish children’s literature is way darker than what I find in English, but they always have amazing lessons and are very empowering to balance it out.

I’m Danish, so I suspect our children’s media isn’t so dissimilar in that respect. As an aside, I find it hilarious that Wikipedia lists it as an ‘adult’ movie.

What’s the title of it, if I might ask?

I know right? For once America actually imported a piece of foreign media with suitable respect for the spirit of the original. Remarkable, really.

          I’ll give it a watch. :)

The book is Familjen by Cecilia Lidbeck. I also really love The Skull by Jon Klassen. It’s one of those picture books with enormous text, but the story is so fucking good.

Thank you very much for the recommendations! As I don’t have kids of my own it’s unlikely that I’ll outright buy them, but I’ll definitely see if I can find another way to experience them. It’s entirely possible my library have - or can temporarily obtain - copies.

You’re terrible at riffing. You’re supposed to say something that builds on the joke, not something that kills all the humour in it.
