Guess I’ll stop buying then. years ago
It’s only logical. How much of that money was going to creators of content I enjoyed anyway? Better to support them directly
Yay piracy!
If buying isn’t owning, eh? 🤘🏼
Interestingly, I do somehow own the movie I didn’t buy.
Oh hey look everybody, streaming is bullshit, just like every other XYZ-as-a-service.
I subscribe to a few, but I also enjoy owning physical media.
I killed off all my subscriptions for a $5 debrid and Stremio. High quality, more content, faster, no ads, cheaper.
what are those?

Takes less than 10 mins to set up if it sounds up your alley. Maybe 15-20 if you also want to install the app on a TV.
Fundamentally you’re just connecting to whatever source of content you want to stream, the Debrid curates it with no need for a VPN and Stremio delivers it.
I don’t “own” those files I downloaded, but I sure as hell have them anyway.
Yeah but you want to slow down that behaviour from companies.
Didn’t u notice how torrent sites are being shut down left and right?Or I’ve only sped up the behavior since every god damned channel and tech company decided to open their own streaming service. It wasn’t a big deal to have a Netflix account and a Crunchyroll account. How many streaming companies are there now?
Sure I do. I buy on disc.
pushes up glasses technically even with a disc you’re only purchasing a license.
My best wishes to anyone trying to enforce it
I may or may not have advocated for the high seas during my lecture today… for comedy sake, of course.
Do we need to dance around piracy on this platform?
I steal everything I watch, and most of what I read, almost all from thepiratebay.org.
I run a Digital Ocean droplet I spun up years ago in Amsterdam. Threw an OpenVPN server on there with solid instructions from Digital Ocean.
$6 a month, I steal media as I please. Ban me.
Piracy is not theft. Copying still leaves the original person in possession of the thing.
I’m just joking about beating around the bush, of course, since that’s what me and the students kept doing in class. The classroom has a zoom room camera and I kept winking at it when we talked about pirating games and music. But we’re also the only ones who see the video so it’s unlikely to get us in trouble, even if people cared.
Also instructors (and academics in general) pirate the fuck out of things. It was even mentioned in my orientation when I went to grad school, haha.
streamio automates this very nicely ;)
torrents on demand!
My work uses PerkBox for a few things and I get a pitiful number of “points” to spend on there each month. The monthly stipend doesn’t even cover a single paid rental.
I refuse to buy movies on digital platforms. I’ve seen too many of them come and go over the years. Either I buy on UHD or not at all. I figure that I’ll never have a practical use for more resolution than that and my UHD player has never spoken to the internet.
How far are we from the soundtracks to movies changing retroactively like they do for TV shows?
It was cheaper for my to buy small soldiers on blueray friday and wait one day than to buy it digity on amazon.
Modern life is a subscription. Detach and be free.
Buy guns. Or obtain them.
If you’re not “subscribing” to ammo & upkeep, you’re not doing guns right.
I rent all my guns.
Amish?
Naw that’s a hit
This isn’t the first time this has happened. Streaming services have shut down before and people have lost their films. I think there was a lawsuit against Apple because they had to remove a film because the license expired. One guy who paid for that film in his library wasn’t happy and sued.
